More than 2,300 HRM residents sign up to stop Halifax Water’s 36.6% rate hike

HALIFAX – A summer campaign opposing Halifax Water’s massive rate hike proposal has attracted more than 2,300 supporters and counting.

First launched earlier in August, the www.stoptheratehikes.ca campaign is inviting residents from across the Halifax Regional Municipality to register their opposition and send emails to the Nova Scotia Regulatory and Appeals Board, Halifax Water and the Mayor and Councillors of Halifax Regional Municipality, which owns Halifax Water and appoints its Board of Commissioners.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a homeowner, commercial property owner, rental property owner, tenant, business of any size, or a not-for-profit organization, you’re afraid of the rate shock that Halifax Water’s 36.6% proposed rate increase will deliver,” said Kevin Russell, Executive Director of Rental Housing Providers Nova Scotia, the campaign’s sponsor. “There’s still time for more people to stand up and speak out against Halifax Water’s rate increase.”

Residents in communities ranging from Hubbards to Jeddore/Oyster Pond, as well as from Middle Musquodoboit to downtowns Dartmouth and Halifax, have signed up to tell Halifax Water, the regulator and City Hall that people, families, seniors, workers and businesses and not-for-profits can’t take the “financial gut punch” of the proposed hike in water costs. Russell has also received positive comments from people outside of Halifax Regional Municipality who are afraid that Halifax Water’s 36.6% rate increase will unleash a flood of similar hikes by other water utilities across the province.

The Nova Scotia Regulatory and Appeals Board is accepting written submissions on Halifax Water’s proposal until Tuesday, September 2. Rental Housing Providers Nova Scotia successfully persuaded the regulatory to extend the written comment period by more than a week.

“With the extra time the regulator has granted for written comments, let’s make sure as many people send the message loud and clear: stop the Halifax Water hike,” added Russell.
