Government Asked for Expert Advice—Then Ignored It
DID YOU KNOW?
Nova Scotia’s Affordable Housing Commission recommended ending the temporary rent cap in 2022.
Instead, the Province repeatedly extended it—first through 2023, then 2025 and now 2027.

WHY?
The Commission was created to examine Nova Scotia’s housing crisis and recommend meaningful solutions. Its 17 members considered research, practices in other jurisdictions and input from more than 2,000 participants.
The Commission supported temporary pandemic protections but warned that rent control could restrict supply, divert investment and discourage the preservation of existing rental housing.
Its long-term direction emphasized increasing supply, reducing development barriers and providing targeted assistance to renters.
THE BETTER DIRECTION FOR NOVA SCOTIA
Implement the Commission’s unfinished recommendation: allow Nova Scotia’s temporary rent cap to expire at the end of 2027.
Housing policy should follow the evidence—encourage rental investment, increase supply and provide targeted assistance directly to renters who need help.
