Chender NDP uses false and misleading rental info
HALIFAX – NDP Leader Claudia Chender claims in last Thursday’s televised debate that rents in Nova Scotia have gone up 70% are false.
Kevin Russell, Executive Director of Rental Housing Providers Nova Scotia (RHPNS), said actual data from Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation show rent increases nowhere near 70%.
“Claudia Chender and the NDP have made lots of false claims to attack hard working, law abiding rental housing providers, but it’s completely irresponsible to use fake numbers like she did in last Thursday’s debate,” said Russell.
According to the CMHC Annual Rental Market Survey, annual rent increases in Nova Scotia were as follows:
- 8.5% in October 2022
- 13.5% in October 2023
Annual rent increase data for October 2024 are likely to be released in February 2025.
“Rent increases in Nova Scotia are not surprising as we warned politicians, including the NDP, that rent control would drive up rents as newly construction building would charge higher rents,” added Russell. “But 22% is not 70%. Ms. Chender needs to withdraw these false claims and cool the rhetoric in using our industry is her favourite political punching bag.”
