MLA Calls for Major Changes to P.E.I.’s Residential Tenancy Act to Protect Landlords

Progressive Conservative MLA Brad Trivers is proposing sweeping reforms to Prince Edward Island’s Residential Tenancy Act, arguing the current system favors tenants. His 45-page document calls for quicker dispute resolution through IRAC, an Office of Residential Tenancy Services, stronger rights for landlords to recoup costs, and the ability to raise rents up to 10% annually in some cases. He also suggests linking tenant compensation to length of tenancy, easing inspections, and enabling wage seizures for arrears. For landlords and multi-unit owners, these proposals, if enacted, would significantly rebalance the rental market, though tenant advocates are expected to push back given P.E.I.’s 0.8% vacancy rate—the lowest in Canada.
