West Hants turns down Halifax developer’s Three Mile Plains, N.S., housing project

THREE MILE PLAINS, N.S. — Residents in a Three Mile Plains neighbourhood do not want three-storey apartments built nearby.

They voiced their concerns at a public hearing Sept. 24 where West Hants council was to consider entering into a development agreement with Jeff Marchand, of Marchand Developments Ltd., to construct three grouped dwellings, each containing 29 units, on the Windsor Back Road.

“It’s intended to be a quiet community that’s integrated into the landscape as much as possible. There’s going to be a significant amount of landscaping,” said Chrystal Fuller, of Brighter Community Planning & Consulting.

Fuller, who represented the project developer at the public hearing, said the current zoning allows for homes to be 35-feet tall and the proposed buildings will be three-storeys.

“Issues of compatibility are often a concern when you have an apartment building like this in a lower density neighbourhood,” said Fuller, adding it was “purposely designed to stay at a profile that fits in with the lower density nature” of the area. [Continue Reading]
